Are you due for a nail salon visit, but don't have the time or want to save money? Do you want to try giving yourself a pretty manicure on your own? I'll make sure you have the tools you need.
Giving yourself a manicure at home can be a fun and relaxing experience. Below is a list of basic items you'll need to get started:
Nail Clippers: Most manicures will start with nail clippers, unless your nails are already at your desired length.
Nail File: After you cut your nails, you will want to smooth the sharp edges or uneven areas. Use a file with a grit that fits your nail type (coarse for thicker nails, fine for more delicate nails). There are files and nail buffers that have a finer grit to smooth the surface of the entire nail.
Cuticle Oil or Cream: Cuticle oil or cuticle cream hydrates and softens your cuticles before gently pushing them back. This is an important step and helps promote healthy and neat-looking nails.
Cuticle Pusher or Orange Stick: To gently push back your cuticles and clean under your nails. For this process, you should be super gentle as you don't want to damage your skin or push too far back.
Nail Polish Remover: Removes any existing nail polish from your nails before starting your manicure and helps to clean up any mistakes.
Cotton Balls or Pads: To apply nail polish remover and clean up any mistakes or excess polish.
Base Coat: It's best to apply a base coat before applying nail polish so your nail polish stays on longer and it helps prevent yellowing on the nail surface.
Nail Polish: Choose the color(s) you would like to paint your nails. Try to steady your hand as much as you can to result in a smoother application. You can apply a 2 to 3 layers of nail polish per nail, but try to make sure that each layer is thin. Try using a nail polish with a formula that suits your preference (regular, gel, quick dry, or dip powder). Just make sure to follow the directions if you choose to use a gel or dip powder option.
Top Coat: Top coat seals and protects the color, enhances shine, and extends how long your nail polish lasts.
Nail Brushes: To clean up the edges and cuticles around your nails for a neat finish and to place designs on the nail.
Hand Cream or Cuticle Oil: After completing your manicure, you should moisturize your hands and cuticles with a hydrating hand cream or cuticle oil to keep them nourished and soft.
Additionally, you may want to invest in a nail buffer, nail polish thinner (to revive thickened polish), an electric nail file, and a UV/LED lamp if you choose to use gel polish.
You should work in a well-lit and well-ventilated area and follow proper hygiene practices. Set aside time to do your manicure so you can take your time during each step for the best results.
